A dynamic Bordeaux appellation
The appellation is located in the Bordeaux vineyards and overlooks the Gironde estuary. The vineyard has a total surface area of 6000 hectares and brings together 450 winegrowers and 3 cooperative cellars spread over 41 communes. It is one of the largest appellations in Bordeaux. The family properties of the AOC have an average surface of 17 hectares.
The production of red wine represents 90% of the production of the appellation. Annually, approximately 280 000 hL of wine are produced, which represents approximately 35 million bottles. It should be added that Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux is the 5th most commercialised red wine AOC in France!
its terroir
The majority of the vines are planted on hillsides, which allows them to benefit from ideal sunshine conditions. There is a great diversity of soils in the region: in the west of the appellation the soils are clay-limestone, ideal for Merlot. To the north of the appellation, the soils are composed of sand and gravel, making them ideal for growing Sauvignon Blanc.
The wines of the appellation
The red wines are fruity, pleasurable wines, made mainly from Merlot, the grape variety that reigns supreme in the appellation. It can also be blended with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec. These wines reveal a superb aromatic palette, and will please both the initiated and the neophyte.
The white wines are mainly made from Sauvignon Blanc and reveal clear aromas of exotic fruits and citrus fruits, typical of the variety. These wines are fresh and offer a beautiful aromatic intensity. Sémillon and Muscadelle can also be added to Sauvignon Blanc, to give more roundness to the wines and attenuate the natural acidity.
