The winemaker

The history of Château la Tour Carnet

Château la Tour Carnet is named after the squire who fought alongside his Seigneur at the end of the Hundred Years' War. This authentic feudal château dates back to the 12th century, but its vineyards were really cultivated from the 16th century onwards.

Thanks to exceptional groundwork, its wine was recognized as a Grand Cru Classé as early as 1855, at the Paris Universal Exhibition. Château la Tour Carnet was bought by Bernard Magrez in 1999. As with all his estates, the entrepreneur granted a colossal amount of capital, which he invested in vines and equipment, in order to restructure the vineyard and give the grapes the best possible treatment.

The terroir of Château la Tour Carnet

The terroir of Château La Tour Carnet is a veritable mosaic of diverse and varied soils. As always with Bernard Magrez, the vineyards are tended using traditional, manual methods to protect the environment, while new technologies are used to manage the estate. Drones, for example, keep a watchful eye on the smallest plot of land to carry out detailed analysis and optimize the winemaker's work.

75 grape varieties to anticipate global warming

For the time being, grape varieties are assigned to parcels, according to their characteristics. For example, the Butte is a terroir more suited to Merlot, while the hillsides are more suited to Cabernet. But what about tomorrow, as temperatures rise?

To anticipate global warming, Bernard Magrez is continuing his own experiments. He's testing the responses of different grape varieties and their changes in ripeness, alcoholic degree, lower acidity, higher sugar content, and so on. That's why, in 2013, he created a private collection of 75 grape varieties. The aim of this plant heritage is to identify the grape varieties of tomorrow.
