The winemaker
The heritage of Maison Barton & Guestier dates back to the 18th century
In 1725, Thomas Barton, an Irishman, settled in Bordeaux and set up his trading company, which is still in business today. In 1755, Germain Rambaud became First Cellar Master for Thomas Barton. In 1802, the partnership between Daniel Guestier and Thomas Barton's grandson became official. The duo organized the shipment of their wines via the Garonne River to Ireland, England, the Netherlands and the United States. Barton & Guestier is now present in over 130 countries. Their reputation grew when Thomas Jefferson, in 1805, asked for wines from this House. Barton & Guestier thinks big: purchases of three châteaux between 1821 and 1875 (Châteaux Langoa, Léoville and Beychevelle). 1969 was a turning point: the newly acquired Château de Magnol, with its Gallo-Roman villa architecture, became the company's headquarters. In 1981, a visit from Richard Nixon further raised the profile of the company. In 1989, Barton & Guestier broke new ground by creating the first Wine Connaisseur Programme.
