The winemaker
The history of the Rothschild family
The story of the Rothschild family begins at the end of the 18th century, when Mayer Amschel Rothschild, a merchant from the Frankfurt ghetto, sent his five sons to conquer Europe. The continent was undergoing profound upheaval, and it was time to take center stage.
Baron Nathaniel, grandson of Mayer Amschel, moved to Paris in 1853 and, in order to serve his own wine to his guests, acquired an estate in the heart of the Médoc, Château Brane Mouton in Pauillac. He then renamed the estate Château Mouton Rothschild.
Nathaniel's heirs paid little attention to the vineyard, until Baron Philippe de Rothschild, his great-grandson. In 1922, he took control of the estate and imposed bottling at the château, which until then had been delivered in barrels to merchants.
In 1933, Baron Philippe de Rothschild acquired Château d'Armailhac and its trading company, Société Vinicole de Pauillac. He renamed it Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Since then, the estate has been handed down from generation to generation, and continues to grow. Today, Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild manage the Château. They work closely with Philippe, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A., which manages the illustrious Premier Cru.
The wines of Baron Philippe de Rothschild
Baron Philippe de Rothschild - Cuvée baron Nathaniel - Pauillac Rouge
Cuvée baron Nathaniel was created as a tribute to the British branch of the Rothschild family. It was he who bought Château Brane Mouton in Pauillac, in the heart of the Médoc, in 1853, and gave his name to the estate. So it was fitting that the cuvée made in his honor should be a Pauillac.
This delicious red wine pays tribute to the expression of fruit, with splendid aromatic richness. It's balanced and smooth, with a long finish. A good wine for laying down, it can also be drunk young. Serve between 16 and 18°C. It goes wonderfully well with red meat and game. It goes particularly well with mushrooms, especially porcini.
Baron Philippe de Rothschild - Mouton Cadet Sauvignon - Bordeaux white
Mouton Cadet is a 100% Sauvignon white Bordeaux. Fresh and elegant, Sauvignon Blanc produces dry wines that are fragrant, lively and crisp. Its color is a pale, bright yellow with light green highlights. The nose is imbued with the characteristic aroma of Sauvignon Blanc, dominated by broom. It also offers notes of boxwood, backed by a beautiful minerality.
The attack on the palate is fresh and fruity. It evokes citrus flavors and continues with a long finish reminiscent of lime. The tasting ends with a mineral note and very fine acidity. Baron Philippe de Rothschild - Mouton Cadet Sauvignon is a wine to be served chilled. It will be perfect for cocktails and aperitifs.
