The winemaker
The history of Maison Trenel
Founded in 1928, Maison Trénel straddles the Burgundy and Beaujolais regions. From the outset, it has been a wine producer, but as a traditional Burgundy house, it also makes fruit creams.
The founder of Maison Trenel was Claude Henri Trenel. His son, André, inherited the company and continued the tradition, teaming up with his friend Jules Chauvet. In 1988, the company passed to André Trenel's nephew, Bruno Chambe.
In 2015, Maison Trenel was bought by Michel Chapoutier, a wine enthusiast with a particular affection for fruit creams.
The Maison Trenel vineyard
The Maison Trenel vineyards stretch across the Mâconnais, Beaujolais and Burgundy regions. The parcels are spread over various appellations: Mâcon villages, Pouilly Fuissé, Saint Véran, Juliénas, Chiroubles, Régnié, Saint Amour, Moulin à Vent, Morgon, Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly, Coteaux bourguignons, Chablis, to name but a few.
The estate has been treated biodynamically since 1991, to preserve the terroir from erosion and impoverishment. All treatments are based on natural elements, and the soils are nourished with organic matter.
Maison Trenel wines
Saint Véran - Clos des Poncétys - vin blanc bio
Saint Véran is a white wine from the Mâconnais region, made with Chardonnay grapes from vines with an average age of 55 years. This wine comes from the red clay soil on limestone bedrock of Clos des Poncétys, on the border with Pouilly Fuissé. This terroir brings minerality and finesse. Saint Véran also benefits from south-facing exposure, giving it power and delicious persistence.Maison Trenel's Saint Véran has a brilliant golden yellow color. The nose blends exotic fruit and citrus, accompanied by white flowers and enhanced by notes of caramel, fresh butter and white pepper. The attack on the palate is supple and builds to a crescendo. The freshness lasts right through to the highly aromatic finish. Saint Véran blanc goes well with spicy dishes, such as chicken with lemongrass and ginger. Drink it young, but cellar it for up to 10 years.
Juliénas Les Capitans - Beaujolais rouge
Maison Trenel's Julienas les Capitans is made from Gamay noir grapes with white juice, from vines aged between 60 and 120 years. The grapes grow on a stony soil of ancient alluvium on a clay-granitic matrix. The Juliénas area is located in northwestern Beaujolais. It is divided between Beaujolais Gamay and Mâcon Chardonnay terroirs. The Capitans vineyard enjoys a full southern exposure, producing robust, fruity and spicy wines.
Juliénas has a dark color and a deep, dense bouquet. This complex wine blends fruity aromas with licorice and tobacco. The palate is powerful and well-balanced, with supple tannins. The wine is fresh and goes perfectly with duck breast, as well as all game birds.
