The winemaker

The history of Maison Jean Loron

Jean Loron, founder of the house that bears his name, specialized in viticulture over three centuries ago, in 1711. Today, the company is one of the oldest and largest winegrowers in southern Burgundy.

Jean's parents worked a variety of crops, as was customary in those days, but he decided to devote himself solely to cultivating his vines, which occupied the steep hillsides of the Beaujolais village of Chénas. He soon extended his estate into the Burgundy terroir and founded the family home.

In 1821, it was the turn of his grandson, Jean-Marie, to manage Maison Jean Loron. He set up near the Pontaneveaux railroad line and station, to facilitate trade.

Jean Loron's heirs have since continued to develop the house. In 2016, Xavier Barbet, representing the eighth generation of Loron, handed over the estate to Philippe Bardet.
