Georges Descombes

4.5
(3 customer reviews)
Georges Descombes first worked in a wine company specialized in bottling. He was thus able to taste renowned Beaujolais wines and develop his expertise in the field. In 1998, he took over the family estate and has since developed his own vision of wine production with practices that aim to favor the purest expression of each terroir and eliminate all unnecessary human intervention. These natural methods have enabled him to produce great terroir wines and he is now considered by many experts as one of the best producers in Beaujolais. Find out more

The winemaker

The Domain

The vineyard of the Georges Descombes estate consists of 16 hectares of vines, 70 years old on average. The grape varieties are those allowed in Beaujolais: the Gamay noir à Jus Blanc for the red and the Chardonnay for the white. The estate's parcels are located on beautiful terroirs of several Crus, mainly in Brouilly and Morgon.

The estate is certified in organic farming, the maturing is done almost without sulfur and the vinification is as natural as possible. The vintages thus express all the beauty and strength of this great terroir. The wines produced by Georges Descombes are rich, greedy and fruity, with a silky, coated texture and exceptional ageing potential.

The wines

The Chiroubles Vieilles Vignes vintage 2018 is a red wine with a beautiful structure, with aromas of small crunchy berries and a full mouthfeel. It is a wine of character that can be drunk both in its youth and after a few years of aging. It will be a wonderful accompaniment to white or red meat.

Saint Amour Vieilles Vignes is a red wine of character, both intense, pure and fresh with lots of fruit. It will be perfect with a plate of charcuterie or red meat.

Brouilly Vieilles Vignes offers, like many Georges Descombes cuvées, bright fruit. It is a typical Beaujolais, with a rich aromatic bouquet mixing red fruits, black fruits and spices. It offers a gourmet palate, both fine and fresh, with a touch of acidity.

The Beaujolais Blanc from Georges Descombes is a certified organic red wine. The nose offers aromas of white flowers, with nuances of exotic fruits and notes of candied lemon. The mouth is enveloping, very fruity with a nice finish in minerality and freshness.

The Morgon Vieilles Vignes cuvée is a wine of pleasure, a flowing Beaujolais with a rich aromatic palette of blackberries and violets. The palate is fine and vigorous, with firm tannins. It is best enjoyed with roasted meat or charcuterie.

Régnié Vieilles Vignes is a subtle and elegant wine. The nose blends aromas of small red fruits with notes of spices and citrus with a nice balance. The mouth is greedy, with a beautiful refined finish. This natural Beaujolais illustrates the genius of Georges Descombes.
