The winemaker

The history of Domaine de la Madone

Domaine de la Madone takes its name from a small chapel at the top of the hill overlooking the village of Fleurie. The winegrowers erected it in 1866 and placed a statue of the Virgin to protect their vines from powdery mildew. La Madone is also the classified climat name for the vines planted on this hill.

Among the winegrowers who hoisted the Madonna to the top of the hill with the help of their oxen was the great-great-grandfather of Arnaud Despres, the current manager of Domaine de la Madone, which has been owned by the Despres family for six generations.

In 2005, Arnaud expanded the family estate by purchasing 5 hectares that had belonged to his great-grandfather. This terroir bears the name Niagara. In 1911, two inventors experimented with erecting 40-meter-high electrified metal pylons. Their aim was to prevent the formation of hail by neutralizing the electricity contained in thunderclouds. More liquid, less violent rain was to prevent the vines from being annihilated by hail.

They named their invention Niagara, after the famous and grandiose waterfalls. Niagara only lasted 10 years, due to poor results for a colossal investment, but the name of the plots remained.

The Domaine de la Madone vineyard

The Domaine de la Madone vineyard covers 17 hectares. It is mainly planted with red grapes, with white grapes accounting for less than one hectare. The red grape variety is Gamay Noir with white juice, the white grape variety is Viognier.

The average age of the vines is 50 years, but some are over 80 years old. Average production at Domaine de la Madone is 100,000 bottles a year.

Domaine de la Madone's vines grow on steep slopes, which means they have to be cultivated by hand. South-facing vines get plenty of sunshine.

The farm is high environmental value (HVE) level 3 certified.
