The winemaker

The history of Château des Bachelards

The Château des Bachelards vineyard was created around the year 1100 by the Benedictine monks of Cluny Abbey in the foothills of the Massif Central. The monks designed the walled estate that still exists today, along with the 17th-century house and outbuildings of the abbey, which was destroyed during the French Revolution. The property was then bought by the Platet family, a family of local notables. Incredibly, the family that later became Lombard-Platet remained owners of Château des Bachelards from 1793 to 2007.

During this period, the estate was one of the best in Beaujolais, and its terroirs were considered remarkable and well located. A graduate in oenology and viticulture, Countess Alexandra de Vazeilles acquired the magnificent property in 2014. Today, the vineyard extends over 12 ha, including 6 ha in Fleurie in a single block around the château.

Terroir and vineyard characteristics

The ten Beaujolais crus and the majority of Beaujolais-villages are planted on granitic and volcanic soils. Geologically, these crus are split in two: the southern part is situated on old schist and Carboniferous lava, while the northern zone, from Fleurie to Moulin-à-Vent, thrives on granitic rock. On the slopes crowned by the chapel dedicated to the Madonna, vines are planted directly into the granite bedrock. This results in more chiselled, brightly-colored wines.

A little lower down, the soil is richer in clay, producing more complex, darker-colored wines. Fleurie's terroir is exceptional, well situated, well exposed to the sun, and invites you to discover the singularity of Beaujolais soils.

The wines of Château des Bachelards

Made with respect for terroir and fruit, the estate's wines perfectly illustrate the typicity and nobility of Gamay. Since the first vintage of the Comtesse in 2014, the awards have continued to place Château des Bachelards among the finest references in the region and even in France. Saint-Amour reveals a perfect balance between gourmandise and roundness. The right concentration, the reserved nose and the patinated tannin guarantee a minimum of ten years' cellaring. The Moulin-à-Vent surprises with its Iberian accent of Spanish rioja. Originally concentrated, the palate refines then firms up, with hints of wood.
