The history of Château de Varennes

The estate was first built in the 11th century. From this period, the entrance pavilion is still standing. The château was transformed into a seigneurial residence in the 11th century. It was destroyed and pillaged by the Huguenots during the Wars of Religion. The estate was completely rebuilt at the end of the 16th century. It became the property of the Charvériat family in 1809.

The terroir and vineyards of Château de Varennes

The estate's soil is distinguished by its richness, as four rocky veins run through it. The terroir is composed of granite, sandstone, siliceous volcanic rock and bluish volcanic rock. This type of soil is ideal for growing vines. The château's winemakers have chosen Gamay and Chardonnay grapes.

The wines of Château de Varennes

Château de Varennes produces four types of red wine using only the Gamay grape variety. Gamay is also used to produce the only rosé wine. The two white wines are made exclusively from Chardonnay.
