The winemaker
Owning over 65 hectares of vines, the Cattin family is one of the largest family-owned and operated vineyards in Alsace. The history of the estate began for the Cattin family at the end of the 17th century, when François Cattin decided to buy this small estate to pursue his passion: becoming a winemaker. The name Joseph Cattin comes from the 3rd generation, who had to overcome phylloxera (the scourge that destroyed almost all vines in the 19th century). Joseph Cattin specialized in grafting to counter this crisis. His brother Théodore Cattin turned to gastronomy. He created the restaurant "La Cigogne" in Paris, which soon became a favorite haunt of the Parisian bourgeoisie, and a superb showcase for his brother's wines. Today, the Joseph Cattin estate's plots of Grand Cru d'Alsace, AOC Crémant d'Alsace and AOC Alsace are concentrated in three regions: in the commune of Voegtlinshoffen, near Colmar and around Steinbach.
