JEAN BAPTISTE ADAM

3.5
(17 customer reviews)
Located on the Alsace Wine Route, at the foot of the Grand Cru Kaefferkopf in Ammerschwihr, the family business was founded in 1614 by Jean-Baptiste Adam, a "gourmet-viticulturist". This official position, established in the Middle Ages, has now disappeared, but the passion for wine has been passed on forever. Since then, fifteen generations have worked tirelessly in the vineyards and cellars. Since 1999, the estate has been committed to environmentally-friendly viticulture, working exclusively with organic methods. But it was in 2003 that nature really came into its own, when the vineyard was converted to biodynamic viticulture. Find out more

The winemaker

The story of a passionate family

Founded in 1614 by the Adam family in Ammerschwihr, the estate has developed know-how that has endured for over four centuries. Today, Laure (15th generation), Jean-Baptiste (14th generation) and Jean Adam (13th generation) manage the estate. The estate is a benchmark in the world and history of Alsatian viticulture.

Commitments

In 2004, Jean-Baptiste Adam introduced organic vineyard management, adding a touch of biodynamic philosophy. In his opinion, this transition is a must, allowing him to focus on the pure, natural expression of the terroir, resulting in a wine that expresses itself in its most natural form.

Thanks to biodynamic viticulture, which considers the vineyard as a living organism, the vines are strengthened and stimulated to better resist disease and parasites without a single recourse to pesticides, insecticides, weed killers or synthetic chemicals.

The estate is ploughed by horse during the waning moon, when the grass grows back less quickly, saving a week. Harvesting is carried out by hand in small crates by porters, so as not to compromise the quality of the berries picked.

Terroir

Domaine Jean-Baptiste is divided into four terroirs:

- Letzenberg. Its marl-clay-limestone soils produce Letzenberg riesling and pinot gris.
- Grand Cru Wineck-Schlossberg. Composed of granite soils, this is a great Riesling terroir.
- Grand Cru Kaefferkopf is Alsace's 51st Grand Cru. Its clay-limestone soil produces Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Kaefferkopf.
- Grand Cru Marckrain. Its clay-limestone soils enable Pinot Gris to be grown.

The wines

White wines make up a solid range, with a few differences. The Riesling Letzenberg is greedy and fresh, ample and salivating. The Grand Cru Kaefferkopf gives a solid, precise and nuanced wine that enriches with lovely saline nuances. The Pinot Blanc offers fruity aromas with freshness and lovely acidity that blend harmoniously to make a dry, balanced wine.

The crémants produced by the estate are dry. A thirst-quenching wine, they are refreshing and can be drunk on any special occasion or simply in the late afternoon. Fresh and thirst-quenching, with floral notes on the nose.
