The winemaker

An ancient family history

The Dopff family has been established in Riquewihr since the 17th century, and the family estate was founded in the 19th after five generations of coopers. Since then, the estate and its know-how have been handed down from generation to generation. The vineyard prospers and evolves with the acquisition of new terroirs, the desire to constantly improve practices and the passion for good wine and a job well done.

Since 1925, Maison Dopff has been based at Le Moulin", a locality at the foot of Schoenenbourg, one of Alsace's Grands Crus. Julien Dopff is the creator of Crémant d'Alsace. He came up with the idea of applying the "méthode Champenoise" to Alsace wines, and what worked so well for Champagne led to the creation of Crémant.

In 1976, Pierre Dopff was the driving force behind the creation of the AOC of the same name. He was also the first to market his wines in fluted bottles. These elegant bottles still distinguish Alsace wines today.

While the Dopffs have made use of modern innovations and inventiveness, they are above all winegrowers attached to know-how and tradition, with a demanding ethic and vision of their profession. Today, the entire estate uses integrated viticulture and is preparing for conversion to organic farming.

An exceptional wine estate

Located primarily in the town of Riquewihr, the Dopff vineyard enjoys a privileged position. It is protected from northerly winds thanks to its location at the foot of the hills, and benefits from a microclimate on the heights, south-facing exposure and exceptionally natural soils.

The Dopff vineyard also includes several Grand Cru terroirs, with 1.3 hectares of clay-marl soils in Grand Cru Sporen and almost 10 hectares in Grand Cru Schoenenbourg.

Dopff also has 20 hectares specifically for Crémant d'Alsace, with 55% Chardonnay, 40% Auxerrois and 10% Pinot Blanc.

Dopff wines

Cremants

Alsace crémants are made either from a single grape variety, often Pinot noir or Chardonnay, or from blends, devised to enhance flavors. Dopff Crémants come in a complete range, with Cuvée Julien, a prestige Crémant named in honor of Julien Dopff, Cuvée Blanc de Noirs made from Pinot Noir, a Rosé made from 100% Pinot Noir, a Chardonnay and Cuvée Bartholdi, made from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc, produced only in the best vintages.

Dopff Grand Crus

In the Alsace Grand Cru appellation, only four grape varieties are represented: Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Muscat and Pinot gris. Dopff owns three of these Grand Crus and produces Prestige cuvées from these terroirs. One example is the Gewurztraminer GC Brand de Turckheim 2017. This elegant, well-balanced wine has won awards with every vintage. The Riesling Schoenenbourg 2016 is a fine, elegant Grand Cru with incredible complexity and beautiful citrus notes.

Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles sweet Rieslings come from the Schoenenbourg Grand Cru

. The "Vendanges Tardives" label is only awarded to rich, mellow wines with great aromatic complexity, produced from grapes harvested at over-ripeness. Sélection Grains Nobles" are fine wines made from grapes affected by noble rot. This is only obtained under very specific climatic conditions, and therefore only in certain years. Dopff produces these exceptional cuvées only in the best vintages.
