Domaines Schlumberger

4
(37 customer reviews)
Located in Guebwiller, Alsace, the Schlumberger estates define themselves as "100% harvesting winegrowers". The wines produced come exclusively from the estate's own land, much of which is classified as Grands Crus. This is a unique feature in Alsace. Another strong feature is that this is a family vineyard, established in 1810. Today's producers are the seventh generation of winemakers. Find out more

The winemaker

An exceptional wine estate

Of the 130 hectares comprising the Schlumberger estates, 70 are located in Grands Crus Classés. These parcels are spread over four terroirs: Spiegel, Kessler, Kitterlé and Saering. The vineyard's location is also atypical. It is located on the southern flank of the Vosges mountains, with triple exposure to the sun (southeast, south and southwest).

The land is steeply sloping, with some slopes as steep as 50%. The estate boasts 850 km of vines, planted horizontally on terraces supported by Vosges sandstone walls.

This situation and the overall topography of the area limit production volumes. The soils are rather poor, and the Schlumberger estates have yields well below the regional average of 45 hl/ha.

Producers have turned this reality into a strength. They have opted for irreproachable quality rather than mass production, and in fact, despite the estate's vast size, only 650,000 bottles are produced each year.

The choice of artisanal viticulture that respects the environment

The estate's soils have always been prepared the old-fashioned way, with the help of two Comtois horses. The entire vineyard is cultivated using sustainable methods, in accordance with the Tyflo Charter of 2003. The Schlumberger estates also have the highest level of HVE (high environmental value) certification.

In this way, the pressure of agricultural practices on the environment is reduced to a minimum, and the preservation of biodiversity is a major concern. Phytosanitary strategy, as well as water and fertilization management, are adapted to the requirements of the HVE label.

The 50 km of dry stone supporting the terraces also require the expertise of specialized professionals, and two masons are responsible for maintaining these walls year-round. Distribution of these excellent wines is also carefully controlled and targeted. They can be found in the finest wine shops and on the menus of prestigious establishments all over the world.

A demanding production of Grands Vins and a complete range

Princes Abbés are cuvées featuring the seven grape varieties of Alsace. The entire range uses grapes from Grands Crus terroirs.

Grands Crus are wines made from three of the four Grands Crus grape varieties: Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewurztraminer. Only the best vintages obtain the Grand Cru classification, and the producer downgrades to the Princes Abbés range those that do not meet his highest standards. In this way, he guarantees top-quality Grand Cru wines.

Cuvées Collection are the estate's rarest wines. They are made from Sélection de Grains Nobles or Vendanges Tardives grapes, and are only produced in the best vintages.
