Built by Capuchin monks in 1612 at the foot of the Schlossberg hill, Domaine Weinbach takes its name from the stream that runs through it, which translates as "wine stream". It has belonged to the Faller family since 1898, and under their management, the estate has prospered, developed and produced some very fine Alsace wines. Now run by Catherine Faller and her sons Théo and Eddy, it is one of France's most renowned wine estates, and its wines have won numerous awards. Find out more

The winemaker

A biodynamic vineyard

Biodynamic viticulture has been tried out at Weinbach since 1998 on just eight hectares, the rest of the estate being worked using more conventional organic farming methods. The entire vineyard has been biodynamically farmed since 2005. Weinbach is certified by Ecocert (organic label) and Demeter for biodynamic practices.

The aim is to improve soil quality by encouraging the life of micro-flora and fauna, to recreate harmony between the earth, plants and the environment, and to respect the natural rhythms of plants and nature. Vineyard work is also adapted to the specific characteristics of each plot.

Great terroirs

The estate boasts a variety of terroirs, and this variety of soils, topography, exposure and climates is an invaluable asset for the production of authentic, more complex and unique wines. Exceptional terroirs and vines cultivated in harmony with their natural environment produce quality grapes and allow us to make great wines.

The vineyard extends over six main terroirs, four of which are classified as Grand Cru. Clos des Capucins is a historic 5-hectare terroir within the walls erected by the estate's founding monks. Situated at the bottom of the slope, in the heart of the hills, it is perfectly protected from the wind. All the estate's grape varieties are grown here.

Grand Cru Schlossberg has been known for the quality of its terroir since the 15th century, making it the oldest Grand Cru in Alsace. It provides particularly favorable conditions for Riesling, giving it a pure, fruity expression of great finesse.

The Furstentum Grand Cru is the ideal terroir for Gewurztraminer, giving it remarkable aromatic complexity, great ageing potential and great finesse.

The wines

Domaine Weinbach offers a very fine range of wines, including varietal wines, cuvées terroir, Grands Crus and exceptional cuvées de vendanges tardives and sélections de Grains Nobles.

Riesling cuvée Théo millésime 2018 is a fruity, delicate and racy white wine with a long finish. The nose is balanced with aromas of white flowers and citrus notes.

Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg 2019 is the most emblematic of Weinbach's Grands Crus. It's a wine with a subtle nose of fruity notes and beautiful minerality. Critics have emphasized its great finesse and harmonious aromatic palette, for this cuvée hailed as a great success by the Weinbach estate.

Quintessence de grains nobles, cuvée d'or is a wine even rarer than the selections de Grains nobles from which it is made. This gewurztraminer is an exceptional, gourmand wine, with floral aromas of jasmine and rose, with notes of sweet spices, cinnamon and candied citrus. It's a wine with a beautiful minerality, typical of its terroir.
