The winemaker
In northern Alsace, there's an estate run by an ambitious winemaker by the name of Étienne Loew. He settled in Westhoffen, a commune located in an environment ideally suited to vine-growing. His family had already noticed the potential of the land, having been present in Westhoffen since the 18th century.
Étienne Loew, who took over the estate in 1996, is the heir to an ancestral family know-how. But our protagonist didn't arrive at the estate by chance. Before taking over the family business, he studied at university and in Oregon. He also worked in various vineyards to gain experience. On his return to the land, he started with 0.72 hectares of vines, a small plot where he could put into practice everything he knew about the world of wine. He soon took over the 5 hectares of vines his parents had kept, bringing the Loew estate to 5.72 hectares. Thereafter, the estate grew steadily, reaching its current size of 11.5 hectares.
Filled with passion and love for wine, his aim was to produce great Alsace wines. It's in this attention to detail that he excels, taking advantage of the highly complex geology surrounding the commune. The diversity of soils is highly singular and the climate is hot and dry, allowing the grapes to ripen well. Add to this the cultivation practices developed to respect the vine, the wine, the terroir and nature... and you get wines worthy of masterpieces!
