The old Pinot-Gris vines on Clos Windsbuhl were planted by the previous owner in the 50s and 60s. In those years, the choice of rootstocks and plants was more quality-oriented, and planting densities were higher, as there were not yet the bulky, wide tractors of today. Windsbuhl is also located in a late-ripening area of Alsace, at a higher altitude (300 to 350m), which explains the late-ripening character of this cru, despite its good exposure and steep slope. Like all late-ripening vineyards, Windsbuhl retains its good health and, above all, its high acidity. As a result, noble rot develops later, even on Pinot-Gris. In 2010, this was quite phenomenal, and it was possible to sort the grapes. This wine comes from the healthy part, and a very powerful fermentation depleted a large proportion of its sugars.
Appearance
Pale yellow-gold color, revealing the ripeness of the grapes, but giving a false impression of the wine's style.
Aroma
The nose is still austere, marked by a reduction in quality due to the good health of the grapes and the long ageing on total lees. Very fruity aromatic potential (pear, quince, citrus).
Wine Floral | Smooth
Taste
Fine roundness on the palate, balanced by delicate acidity, makes this a sapid wine that's easy to drink. Slightly smoky aromas and a hint of roasting.
