Appellation Alsace Muscat
Discovering the AOC Muscat d'Alsace
The Muscat d'Alsace appellation can be produced throughout the Alsace vineyards, but its appellation area represents 345 hectares. The vines are mainly planted on the plains, although some plots are located on the hillsides. Muscat d'Alsace is aptly named as it is made from...Muscat! However, Muscat can be produced from several types of Muscat, the white Muscat with small grains, also called Muscat d'Alsace, the Ottonel Muscat, and finally, in very small quantities, the pink Muscat with small grains.
These grape varieties enjoy a very favourable dry continental climate: the summer sunshine is strong, and the winds and rain are rare thanks to the protection afforded by the Vosges mountains. They are planted on silt and limestone soils, which are perfectly suited to their development.
Tasting of Muscat d'Alsace
Muscat d'Alsace reveals a yellow colour with green reflections when young. It will take on golden hues with the years. The nose is very vegetal, notably with blackcurrant buds, the hallmark of Muscat à petits grains. Floral notes can also be detected, and with the years, spices and aniseed develop. On the palate, it is a wine of rare freshness, which gives the sensation of biting into fresh grapes. When it is composed mainly of white Muscat, the mouth is nervous. It becomes rounder when the majority of the Muscat is Ottonel. In all cases, the aromas are intense and persistent.
These dry and refreshing white wines are perfect as an aperitif, but they are also the best companions for asparagus and other vegetables, cooked or raw. With grilled fish or smoked salmon, the pairing is also successful.
