The winemaker
Domaine Albert Mann is a winery located in the commune of Wettolsheim, in the Haut Rhin department of the Grand Est region. The estate produces 7 AOC Alsace Grand Cru wines.
Domaine Albert Mann is located in the heart of Alsace. It was born of the association of two great Alsatian winegrowing families: the Mann family, established since the early 17th century, and the Barthelmé family, winegrowers since 1654.
In 1997, the estate switched to biodynamic viticulture. Although this requires more work and investment, it allows us to respect the environment, while giving the wine its own identity.
The estate vinifies its production in the winery located below the village of Wettolsheim.
Domaine Albert Mann is now owned by two brothers, Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé.
The Domaine Albert Mann vineyard covers 25 hectares, the vast majority of which - 21 hectares - is dedicated to white wine. The parcels are divided into a hundred or so small islets, each cultivated separately, like a small garden. One of the vineyards is farmed organically and biodynamically.
Pinot Noir is the only grape variety used for red wines. The white wines are made from 36% Riesling, 20% Pinot Gris, 17% Gewurztraminer, 15% Auxerrois, 11% Pinot Blanc and 1% Muscat à petits grains blancs.
The average age of the vines is 30 years and annual production 120,000 bottles.
Biodynamic viticulture, established in 1997, encourages the organic life of the soil, as well as the development of mycorrhizae on the vine roots. This factor is particularly important in enabling the Alsace terroir to express its typical character.
The soil is worked by ploughing and the use of plant cover. This method encourages the vines to extend their roots vertically, so that they can extract minerals from the decomposition of the bedrock. The grapes are thus imbued with the specific characteristics of the region's soil.
The grapes are harvested by hand.
