Cahors is a small wine-growing region on the Lot. In the 19th century, its dark, almost black-red wines competed with Bordeaux. They are traditionally made from malbec, locally known as cot or auxerrois. Today, this grape variety is most often blended with the very supple Merlot. Wines made from the ancient alluvial deposits of the Lot are the most complex.
The 1986 vintage was an excellent one, with a large crop. The red wines were austere and tannic. The Cabernets were highly colored, with little nose to begin with, and just needed to age.
