It was founded in 1772 and is known for having invented the remuage process, which eliminates the lees and gives finished wines a clear appearance. The house was founded by philippe clicquot in 1772 as a sideline to his successful textile business, but became the region's second-largest champagne producer under his daughter-in-law, barbe-nicole ponsardin. François clicquot died in 1805 but barbe-nicole carried on alone and, with the help of her father-in-law's investments and some skilful wine smuggling to czar alexander ier of russia. Veuve clicquot ponsardin is now owned by louis vuitton möet hennessy (lvmh). Today, the company owns one of the most important vineyards in Champagne: 390 hectares in 12 of the 17 Grand Crus and 20 of the 44 Premier Crus.
