"This underestimated estate pays tribute to the 1947 vintage. Few will be lucky enough to find this vintage at auction, but it will certainly sell well below its true value. As supple and fleshy as a great Pomerol, it's still remarkable half a century after bottling," says Robert Parker of his 1994 tasting of the 1947 vintage. Located to the north-west of Pomerol, on the border with Lalande-de-Pomerol, Château Clos René is one of the best value-for-money estates in its appellation. Its creation dates back to 1734, when it was known as "reney". Its history is now written by the Lasserre family, owners for six generations. It was in 1942 that pierre lasserre arrived at the estate with the help of the durantou family, owners of the prestigious château l?eglise clinet. Since then, his descendants have carried on the family traditions, recently adding a touch of modernity that has led to the vineyard being cultivated using "sustainable agriculture". Respectful of the terroir inherited from their forebears, the current owners produce a wine of great uprightness, with a classic, fruity and fresh style. The woodiness is well integrated, without excessive character, a quality that particularly appeals to American wine critic Robert Parker, who regularly awards the château 90/100 ratings. His successor at the wine advocate guide, Neal Martin, seems to share this opinion, awarding the château a 91-93/100 score during his en primeur tasting of the 2015 vintage: "On the nose, Clos René has lovely aromas of raspberries and crushed strawberries. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a very refined spicy finish. This is a fine Pomerol to discover, certainly one of the best in this part of the appellation.
