"this is a great wine worthy of the malet roquefort family, who have owned the château since the 17th century", declared robert parker after tasting the 2010 vintage. Situated to the south of the town of Saint-Emilion, the château is in the locality of "la gaffelière", close to its namesake château canon la gaffelière. The vines are planted between the hills of Angélus and Pavie, on clay-limestone soil typical of Saint-Emilion.The history of both vineyards began with the purchase of an estate by the Count of Malet-Roquefort in the 17th century. This was followed by a division of the plots, with the current Château la Gaffelière on one side, and Château Canon la Gaffelière on the other. Viscount louis-alexandre malet-roquefort, then mayor of saint-émilion, was appointed head of the château in the mid-nineteenth century. His work and the legacy he left to his descendants made the estate, then known as "peygenestous-naudes", one of the most renowned in saint-emilion, which achieved the rank of premier grand cru classé in 1955.over the years, the family enlisted the help of some of the leading figures in the libournais: alexandre thienpont, first as cellar master in 1984, then stéphane derenoncourt as ?nologue conseil in 2004.this family heritage, combined with an exceptional terroir and four centuries of craftsmanship, produces exceptional wines every year, as in the 2010 vintage, which robert parker rated 95+/100: "this 2010 offers a woody bouquet with notes of toasted oak and crushed stone. Mineral and fresh, it has a unique precision that suggests the potential for over thirty years of cellaring."
