The winemaker

In 1847, shortly after arriving from England, Joseph Gilbert built a fine property in Eden Valley and planted the region's first vines. Rising above the Barossa Valley on undulating terrain, Eden Valley is situated between 450 and 500 meters above sea level. At this altitude, cooler temperatures and greater diurnal amplitude allow the grapes to retain their natural acidity, with fine aromas and flavors developing slowly well into the cool, dry autumn. Soils across Eden Valley are generally shallow, rocky and acidic, in many areas suitable only for sheep and cattle grazing. There are special pockets with slightly deeper soils and finer rocks, where vineyards have been planted. Pewsey Vale is one of the world's great Riesling vineyards. Where there is a true alliance between nature and variety, the need for human intervention is minimal. Gentle handling and an understanding of place are all that's needed to create consistent, delicious wines... vintage after vintage.
