The winemaker
"Penfolds is one of Australia's oldest estates. It's a point of pride, and one we're often reminded of. And it shows. The story began one hundred and seventy-two years ago, in Magill, an outlying district overlooking Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, with the ocean as its horizon. Englishmen Christopher Rawson and Mary Penfold settled in Magill in 1844. Rawson, who was a physician, believed in the virtues of fortified wine to treat his patients and set about making the nectar. And as if we should never forget it, the couple's first house still stands, intact, at the entrance to the estate. "Champagne Krug was born in 1843, just a few months before Penfolds," says head winemaker Peter Gago to those who ask him about "New World wine". Le Monde
