The winemaker

Henschke is one of the country's great names, whose history closely parallels that of the Australian vineyard. Fleeing religious persecution, Johann Christian left his native Silesia and settled in 1861 in Keyneton, in the Eden Valley, an hour's drive from Adelaide. The first vineyard was planted in 1861 and the first wine marketed in 1868. Over the generations, the vineyard grew and so did the reputation of the wines. Today, Stephen and Prue Henschke are at the helm of this upmarket family estate, which pioneered the exploration and development of South Australia's Eden Valley and Adelaide Hills vineyards. In addition to the legendary "Hill of Grace" cuvée, Henschke produces an exemplary range of wines mainly from its own vineyards, with remarkably well-balanced whites and deep, elegant reds, some of which have a long ageing potential.
