The winemaker

The idea of a partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and the Catena family was born in 1999. The enthusiasm born of this idea quickly materialized in the project to create a unique wine from the alliance of two cultures, French and Argentinean, two grape varieties, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, and the expertise of both houses. The Catena family, 3 generations of winemakers, drew on their knowledge of Mendoza's high-altitude terroirs and their passion for the Malbec grape to find the best vineyards. DBR (Lafite) contributed its century-old expertise in Cabernet Sauvignon and the art of making great wines by combining different grape varieties. Exchanges and selection work began in 1999 to produce the first vintage of CARO in 2000. The success of the first vintages led in 2003 to the creation of another wine, AMANCAYA, which, like its predecessor, is a harmonious balance of Argentine identity and Bordeaux style. Then, Bodegas CARO chose to celebrate the emblematic grape variety of the Argentine vineyard by selecting a pure Malbec, ARUMA, from the 2010 vintage. Bodegas CARO's cellars, in the heart of Mendoza, have been housing the wines since the 2003 vintage and are the anchor of the CARO project. Renovation of the historic building and gardens to enlarge the winery and open up the bodega to the outside world put the finishing touches to the initial project.
