The winemaker
A unique story
In 1988, Michel Rolland, an oenologist from Bordeaux, discovered Argentina. He was enchanted by this country, by the atmosphere, the population, the landscapes and the culture, but also by the Argentinean wine potential.
In the mid-1990s, he set out to conquer this country and began to search, with an associate named Jean-Michel Arcaute, for a vineyard to start making wine. They finally bought an estate of over 800 hectares, south of Mendoza.
Joined by five friends: Bertrand Cuvelier, Jean-Guy Cuvelier, Alfred-Alexandre Bonnie, Laurent Dassault and Baron Benjamin de Rothschild, Michel Rolland and Jean-Michel Arcate divided the land into individual bodegas and together created Clos de Los Siete, meaning the Clos of the 7. They are the ones who still run Clos de los Siete today.
Terroir originality
Located 100km south of Mendoza, Michel Rolland discovered a particularly interesting terroir. The soils are ideal, consisting of gravel, pebbles and clay. The Andes mountain range helps to temper the climate in a very sunny country, especially as these vines, facing south/south-west, are exposed to the sun every season.
In addition, a drip irrigation system is installed to give only the necessary amount of water to the vines, the water coming from a water table fed by the melting snow and glaciers of the Cordillera. All these elements make this land an exceptional place for all the vines to flourish.
Malbec is the main grape variety. Originally from Cahors, Michel Aymé Pourget, an agronomist by training, planted this variety in Argentina in the mid-19th century. Argentina is now the world's leading producer of Malbec.
On the Clos de los Siete land, there are other grape varieties such as Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet-Franc and Petit Verdot, and the blend of these different grape varieties varies according to the vintage, although Malbec remains the dominant grape.
Rigorous work that produces prodigious wines
The work of the vine on these lands is comparable to that of a grand cru vineyard: green harvesting, installation of the vines in espalier to allow an optimal development of the surface, controlled yields, manual harvesting and search for an optimal quality. Thus, since the 1990s, seven vintages have followed one another. These wines, of undeniable quality, power and incredible intensity are appreciated appreciated worldwide.
