The winemaker
The domain
Cheval des Andes was founded in 1999. The property is situated on particularly well-drained sandy-clay soil. This soil favors deep rooting of the vines and benefits from a mild climate.
In this unique and exceptional terroir, five grape varieties are grown with respect for natural cycles. Malbec dominates, accounting for almost 60% of the vineyard. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot complete the vineyard.
Some Malbec vines are as old as 80 years and have the particularity of never having been grafted. They come from vines imported from France in the mid-19th century, before phylloxera ravaged European vineyards.
Responsible viticulture
The support of the Château Cheval Blanc teams, the transmission of their experience of this mythical Saint-Emilion grand cru classé, rigorous practices and constant care have enabled the production of a true "Grand Cru" of the Andes.
Each plot receives specific care, corresponding to its own needs, and vineyard work is adjusted according to soil quality, exposure and grape variety.
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand and fermented in oak barrels.
Wines with a unique style
Cheval des Andes wines are characterized by elegance, freshness and good ageing potential. While the initial ambition was to produce cuvées inspired by the best Bordeaux wines, the cuvées produced on the estate have a strong Argentinean signature, with an elegant, singular personality. These are highly expressive Grands Crus, both refined and intense.
Cheval des Andes is the estate's iconic cuvée. The 2010 vintage was made from a blend of Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
This wine offers elegant aromatic complexity and combines balance and freshness with great maturity and excellent ageing potential. It is the perfect accompaniment to refined meat dishes such as lamb or duck breast.
