CASARENA

4
(5 customer reviews)
The modern history of Casarena began in 2008 with the aim of bringing honor to the great historic terroirs of Perdriel and Agrelo, located in the north of the Mendoza region. The renovation of a century-old winery and the acquisition of four exceptional vineyards have enabled the team led by Mariano Quiroga Adamo, the estate's young and highly talented winemaker, to produce a range of remarkable wines, including a series of fragmented wines that express the great diversity of the region. The winemaker

An estate with rich traditions

Located in the Alto Valle del rio Mendoza, the Casarena estate follows in the footsteps of the Agrelo and Pedriel regions. The estate's name comes from the marriage of the Spanish words "casa" and "arena" (house and sand), paying homage to the terroir and sandy soils that make up the vineyard.

The Pedriel region borders the Rio Mendoza and is made up of muddy soils with a stony surface. The Agrelo, south of Pedriel, consists of more clayey, alluvial soils. The estate as a whole is dotted with the sandy-colored stones that give it its identity.

The vineyard lies at an altitude of 1,000 meters, which helps to regulate the climate and temperatures. Casarena is divided into four vineyards: Lauren's Vineyard, Owen's Vineyard, Jamilla's Vineyard and Naoki's Vineyard. The first vineyard to be planted was Owen's Vineyard, in 1930.

The wines

The estate's microclimate and micro-terroir are highly diverse. The soil profile can change within a few dozen meters. This gives rise to deep wines with a complex character.

The Owen vineyard features deep clay soils, with outcropping rocks and sandy-clay subsoils, giving deep wines with melted tannins.

The Lauren vineyard is in the coolest region of Agrelo with variations in temperature between day and night, allowing good ripening of the grapes. Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are grown here.

The vignoble Jamila is located on the alluvial plains of the Rio Mendoza and produces elegant Malbecs with good consistency, fine-grained tannins and great aromatic richness.

The Naoki vineyard is planted in a territory of steep slopes and strongly marked by terraces (it was long thought unsuitable for viticulture). Its chalky soil and poor water supply produce Malbec with a taste of plum, fresh red fruit and the spices of the local flora.

Some cuvées, notably the "Reservado" cuvées, are a blend of different grapes, or different varietals, from these vineyards, depending on yields and the balance of the wines produced.
